Casey Cup retained in its second year

In early February Thames and our neighbours Vesta RC once again raced for the Casey Cup, the magnificent trophy named after former coach Noel Casey.

After winning the 1st and 2nd 8s’ races in 2019, the aim was to do the same again and also win the 3rd 8s’ race as well. With the club’s 2nd 8 scheduled to race London for the Rayner Cup the following day, the decision was taken to race the 3rd and 4th 8s and rest the 2nd 8’s legs.

The 4th 8 went off first, taking clear water before Barnes Bridge and holding on to the lead throughout the race to win by 22 seconds. The 3rd 8 looked even more dominant, ultimately crossing the line at the Vesta flagpole by 49 seconds.

The Casey Cup race was eventful. Thames had a comfortable lead by the crossover, but the race had to be stopped due to a stationary schoolboy crew in the middle of the river. Umpire Tony Reynolds restarted with the crews the same distance apart as when they had stopped. The upset did not affect the Thames women, who kept the pressure on and won the race comfortably.

Unfortunately the Rayner and Boustead Cups against London the following day had to be cancelled due to high winds, meaning Thames will retain these trophies for another year as well.
