Gold at Junior National Championships

J17 sculler Oscar Bird, with soon to be TRC sculler Ashley Cowley (Newark RC), stormed to gold by 5 seconds at Holme Pierpoint over the weekend of 19-20 July.

Only their second race together, with no idea of potential speed they posted the second fastest qualifying time behind St Leonard’s School by 0.1 second, won their semi final by a comfortable margin and stormed the final leading by a length at 250m a margin which just kept increasing to around 3 lengths clear at the finish.

To cap a memorable weekend they were approached by England Team manager Jason Foster after the medal ceremony and invited to represent England at the Home International Regatta which was held in Cork on 26th July. Here a close second place behind the Irish Coupe double helped towards the points total that secured victory for England in the Junior Boys competition. The Junior Girls were also victorious in their points competition sadly without the assistance of any TRC Juniors this year.

Adding the events of the last 2 weeks to the success of qualifying for the Fawley cup this year, and the numerous wins for the junior section, make this a season to be very proud of!
