It was with sadness that Thames RC learned of the death of longstanding member Charles Eugster on the evening of April 26 2017 due to complications following heart failure. Charles was 97.

Charles rowed for Thames in the 1930s and 1940s. He raced in the club’s Grand Challenge Cup crew in 1939, which also represented Great Britain in an international race against Germany in Ostend – winning by a canvas – and steered our Wyfold 4- in 1948.

After a successful career as a dentist in Switzerland, Charles returned to rowing in his 60s and was successful at World Masters level. In his 80s he started bodybuilding, and in his 90s focused on athletics and proceeded to set a series of world records in the 95+ age category.

Charles also built a second career as a motivational speaker, appearing on television and this year releasing his first book, Age is Just a Number. He believed strongly in the power of staying active in old age.

He continued to support the club, proudly sporting his Thames blazer and cap at Henley. His after-dinner speech at a recent annual dinner will live long in everyone’s memory as, with verve and wit, he described that memorable race in Ostend against the Germans.

In a statement Charles’ son André said: “We fully supported Dad in his endeavours and aside from our personal loss it is so sad that he passed away at the height of his success. He wanted to inspire the world.”

Charles certainly inspired everyone who met him at Thames. Our condolences go to his family.

Charles Eugster, 1919 - 2017
